Users have learned how to filter data from tools like Excel, Outlook, Amazon, and modern SaaS apps—and they bring those expectations into every app they use. When filtering feels confusing, slow, or inconsistent, users don’t blame the data model… they blame the app.
In this practical, builder-focused session, we’ll break down five filtering UX patterns users actually expect, explain when each pattern works best, and demonstrate them live in a Canvas App—including the real-world tradeoffs and constraints that every platform imposes.
You’ll walk away with a clear decision framework for choosing the right filtering approach based on data size, performance, usability, and platform limits. Whether you’re building Canvas Apps, Model-Driven Apps, Power Pages, or custom solutions, these patterns apply universally—the implementation details change, but the UX principles don’t.
My mission is to leverage the Power Platform as a pro dev’s enterprise-grade dream machine, while advocating for its use by citizen developers to unlock an entirely new class of builders. I approach the Power Platform with a mindset shaped by more than two decades across creative, technical, and executive roles. I thrive at the intersection of creative and nerdy - equally energized by designing beautiful interfaces as I am developing complex logic. My passion is creating and advocating for apps that look and feel as good as they behave and scale. As a senior consultant with the PowerApps911 team, I work at the leading edge of the Power Platform in real enterprise environments. Alongside client work, I focus heavily on training and education - sharing practical, opinionated guidance through YouTube, as well as live, on-demand, and written technical training for teams who want to go deeper
