Is the mainframe a modern application platform or a dinosaur of an era gone by?
Oddly enough, mainframes are mission-critical, with growth in mainframe usage expected to increase over the next two years — including the amount of data and applications on the mainframe and transaction volume. In fact, Deloitte found that most IT professionals (74%) see the mainframe as a long-term strategic platform.
Mainframes are still in use today for large-scale transaction processing. Managed services have been shown to improve their operational stability and platform uptime, while also reducing operational costs.
BeTechly hosted a webinar, How Much Is Your Data Center Slowing Down Operations?, featuring Brian Olafson, Sales Executive for Managed Services, Cloud, and IaaS at Glass House Systems, an IBM Platinum Partner focused on infrastructure, security, and managed services.
What Are Your Company’s Greatest Data Center Concerns?
Executives took part in our registration poll. One in four (25%) of respondents cited a lack of budget or resources, while another 25% cited challenges with IT modernization or optimization. When asked to select the specific systems currently installed in their data centers, power servers and x86 servers came out on top, at 25% and 23%, respectively. AS400 came out at the bottom, with 4% of respondents selecting this system.
The live audience later shared their input via our event Peer Poll. Here’s what the executives who took the poll had to say:
Upgrading legacy infrastructure is the top priority: When asked about what technical priorities in the data center will benefit a company’s operations most this year, modernizing legacy systems infrastructure came out as the leading answer, with half of respondents (50%) selecting this response.
x86 platforms for the most impact: Two out of 5 respondents (40%) felt that x86 will be the on-premise platform with the greatest impact on their company’s operations today.
Migrating to the cloud will be a priority this year: With regard to their legacy, mainframes, or non-x86 systems, the majority of respondents cited migrating workloads to a cloud platform as a top priority.
